Last Chance for Masters to Race This Year on the Schuylkill River - Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series 2012 Season Concludes with Turn & Burn Regatta Sunday, November 11th



Philadelphia, PA – November 8, 2012 – The 2012 schedule of the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series comes to a close this Sunday, November 11th, with the Philadelphia Children’s Foundation fifth annual Turn & Burn Regatta.

This Sunday’s Turn & Burn Regatta marks the last chance for masters rowers to race this year on the historic Schuylkill River.  The event begins at approximately 10 a.m. and continues to approximately 1 p.m.  There are approximately 70 boats entered from 17 clubs and five states.  There are masters, open, college, high school and junior events scheduled.  Admission to view the Turn & Burn Regatta on the banks of the Schuylkill River along is free of charge.  Limited parking for cars is available nearby in Fairmount Park. The starting line for Sunday’s Turn & Burn Regatta is above the Strawberry Mansion Bridge with the finish line above the "Viking" statue on Boathouse Row. 

The Philadelphia Children’s Foundation Turn & Burn Regatta is comprised of a "Turn" in the morning (a 750 meter “old fashioned” stake boat turning race where the rowers literally turn at a stake approximately one-half mile up the course and row back), and a "Burn" in the afternoon (a 500 meter sprint).  . All proceeds from this regatta go to supporting the Philadelphia Children’s Foundation’s mission to empower children of all ages to find their passion, develop needed skills and make positive career and life decisions to achieve a successful future. 

With three of the largest regattas in the Mid-Atlantic region on the schedule, as well as two of the nation's oldest regattas, the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series connects the rowing competitors of today to the historic home of the international rowing elite. It is built upon a tradition that launched November 12, 1835 with the first organized regatta on Philadelphia’s historic Schuylkill River (a full eight years before the start of the rowing program at Harvard). 

The Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series has been recognized by the Philadelphia Sports Congress as one of the "Premier Annual Events" for the city, state and region along with the Penn Relays (April); Blue Cross Broad Street Run (May); Devon Horse Show (May); TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship (June); Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon (June); ING Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon (September); the Philadelphia Marathon (November) and Army-Navy Football.
