The Schuylkill Navy Selects Jim DeLorenzo Public Relations as Agency of Record for the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series

Philadelphia, PA -- December 20, 2010 – The Schuylkill Navy has selected Jim DeLorenzo of Jim DeLorenzo Public Relations as their public relations agency of record for the upcoming Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series.

The Schuylkill Navy, founded in 1858, is the oldest amateur athletic governing body in the United States, and comprises the 12 rowing clubs of Philadelphia’s historic Boathouse Row along the Schuylkill River.

“Jim DeLorenzo brings a love of sports and competition along with experience not only in public relations but in business strategy that we believe will be integral to the success of the inaugural season of the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series,” said John Hogan, Commodore of the Schuylkill Navy. “We are counting on him not only to spread the word about our events and our historic legacy, but also to attract corporate sponsorships and business partners that will enhance the future growth of the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series.”

Earlier this year, the Schuylkill Navy joined forces with 22 of the regattas held on the Schuylkill each season to create the nation’s first season-long series, the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series, which will officially begin in 2011.

The Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series will run from March through November, and it is estimated that over 35,000 competitors in over 7,700 boats will be represented with high school, college, club, open and masters programs.

“I am honored by the opportunity to work with the Schuylkill Navy to bring greater attention to this world-class confederation of 22 of the country’s best rowing events in the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series,” said DeLorenzo.

Philadelphia’s historic Schuylkill River hosts more regattas each year than any other river in the country, including the second-largest regatta in the nation, the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, which is also the nation’s oldest. It is also the largest high school regatta in the country.

In addition to the Stotesbury Cup, the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series includes two more of the largest regattas in the Mid-Atlantic region, the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta with over 5,000 competitors; and the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association Championship with more than 2,500 competitors.

“We are excited to have a proven public relations partner like Jim DeLorenzo join us to enhance our efforts in the community and with potential business partners,” said Clete Graham, chair of the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series advisory committee and past commodore of the Schuylkill Navy.

A lifelong resident of the Delaware Valley, DeLorenzo has operated his own firm, Jim DeLorenzo Public Relations, since July 1999, serving small businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs with clients in a diverse variety of industries

No stranger to the world of sports, DeLorenzo has worked with a number of sports figures and properties over the past decade, including former Philadelphia Phillies slugger Greg "The Bull" Luzinski and Baseball Hall of Famers George Brett and Dave Winfield, among others.

In addition to the Schuylkill Navy and the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series, DeLorenzo currently counts among his clients ESPN Founder Bill Rasmussen and Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer. Additionally, he represents Philadelphia’s leading independent janitorial services provider, Team Clean (also the region’s leading minority owned and woman-owned business) and other clients both locally and nationally in tech, financial services and professional services.

Before starting his own firm, DeLorenzo was the Director of Public Relations for US Interactive, Inc. (1997-1999). During his tenure with this pioneering Internet strategic consulting firm DeLorenzo was an integral part of the senior management group that grew the company from 35 employees in two cities, to over 250 employees in five cities, and completed a successful initial public offering.

Previously, he was Publicist for an International men's senior tennis circuit, the Champions Tour, which featured Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe and other legendary tennis champions.

DeLorenzo's public relations career began at Villanova University, where he capped his 11-year tenure with the Wildcats' Athletic Department as their Sports Information Director/Director of Media Relations from 1990 through 1995. He directed all public relations and other marketing efforts for this historic NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic program with 24 men's and women's teams. His wide-range of responsibilities also included game-day arena management strategies, media campaigns, direct mail, media relations, event production, and game day operations in press box, pressroom, stadiums and arenas both on and off campus.

The Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series debut season launches March 20, 2011 with the first of the five Manny Flick Regattas for high school competitors.
