Philadelphia, Pennsylvania –
February 27, 2014 – Philadelphia City
Rowing,
which was established in
2010 to empower Philadelphia public school students through the sport of
rowing, will celebrate their new indoor center with an Open House on Saturday,
March 1st from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 2700 West Girard Avenue
(Philadelphia, PA 19130).
The Philadelphia City
Rowing indoor facility is 4,400 square feet, and provides Philadelphia public
school students enrolled in the program with an “erg-ing” room (with indoor
rowing machines known as “ergometers”), a small weight room, and a combined
office area and study area for the program.
During the Open House,
light snacks and beverages will be provided, as well as interactive erg
demonstrations. The Philadelphia City
Rowing program video will also be shown.
““We
are entering our fourth year, and we continue to grow, as evidence by our new
indoor space, as well as our thriving student programs and parent and booster
groups. We started Philadelphia City
Rowing in 2010, and have grown from 40 participants to 80 participants from
23 different Philadelphia Public or Charter high schools, and 24 participants
in our middle school program,” said Terry Dougherty, Executive Director of Philadelphia
City Rowing.
“All
of us at Philadelphia City Rowing are excited to now have a place to
call our off-river home,” Dougherty said.
“Our new space is less than a mile from our boatyard, and easily
accessible to public transportation. We
now have space for fitness
training, ergs, as well as study space and office area. This space allows
Philadelphia City Rowing a venue for
winter and rainy day training. More importantly it offers space for homework
help and drop-in tutoring. Additionally it will allow our Middle School
Program to share space during the fall and spring seasons. We are
very excited for everyone to see the space.”
Dougherty and her colleagues on staff at Philadelphia City Rowing,
and volunteers, painted and set up the facility during the Christmas holidays,
and Philadelphia City Rowing moved into their new home officially on
Monday, January 6th.
Philadelphia City
Rowing was established in
2010 to empower Philadelphia public school students through the sport of
rowing. The organization provides mentoring, academic support, and a
highly structured athletic program designed to reinforce the values that rowing
instills. The program’s ultimate goals are to help local youth lead healthier
lives, pursue a path to higher education, and reach their full potential.
Philadelphia City Rowing was founded based on the principle that rowing teaches
discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, and works to reinforce these values and
help student-athletes extend them to all aspects of their lives. To this
end, Philadelphia City Rowing provides academic support
services and a mentoring program that pairs student-athletes with adult role
models from the rowing community. Ultimately, Philadelphia City
Rowing uses competitive rowing as a vehicle to improve the health,
well-being, self-confidence and academic success of Philadelphia’s public
school students while involving all participants in one of Philadelphia’s
greatest sporting traditions. Additional information is available at http://www.PhiladelphiaCityRowing.org and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/philadelphiacityrowing.
