Head of the Schuylkill Regatta Announces New Partnerships with Regatta Central and Race Day

Philadelphia, PA – April 11, 2012 -- The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta (HOSR) today announced new partnerships with Regatta Central and Race Day, two well-known and highly respected rowing organizations who will perform important management functions for the HOSR, the largest regatta on Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River and a key fall event in the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series.

Regatta Central will be the new registrar and Race Day, the official timer for the 2012 Regatta, scheduled for Saturday, October 27th and Sunday, October 28th.

Now in its 42nd year, the HOSR will open registration on May 1, 2012.  Coaches and competitors, already familiar with Regatta Central, will finally have the opportunity to put the HOSR on their regatta schedules at the same time they register for other races.

According to Lisa Verges Dunlop, president of the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, “We expect this new relationship to be a win-win for both the Regatta Operations Committee and our more than 6,500 participants.  We continue to explore every opportunity to make the HOSR experience as seamless and user friendly as possible, from beginning to end.  Regatta Central makes registration easy for competitors and coaches while offering excellent information for the race organizers to receive the information it needs, in real time.  The wonderful staff at Regatta Central knows the sport from all perspectives and we look forward to working with them as we continue to grow.”

Regatta Central and Race Day have worked as a team for several years, especially on the Schuylkill River

According to Clete Graham, former Commodore of the Schuylkill Navy and founder and principal of Race Day, “We are confident that our experience, combining all aspects of race management for more than 20 regattas on the Schuylkill, will benefit the HOSR.  We know this will be a great relationship for the future of both organizations.”

With the addition of the Head of the Schuylkill, Steve Lopez, founder and president of Regatta Central, now counts every Philadelphia regatta as part of his roster.

“The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta is one of the largest and most respected head races in the U.S.” said Lopez.  “We welcome them to Regatta Central and know we will enjoy this new relationship.  We anticipate a great year and look forward to celebrating in Philadelphia on October 27th and 28th.”

In 1971, three members of University Barge Club, located in the heart of Philadelphia's Boathouse Row, launched the idea for a new fall race, the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, transforming the 1000 meter Graduate Sculls race into a head racing format.  The aim of 1960 Olympian Lyman Perry, Jay Pattison III, and the late Raul Betancourt, was to offer rowers of all ages congenial autumn competition.  While the expansive scope of the two-day Regatta today bears little resemblance to its 1971 roots, the spirit of the Regatta endures: a fall race showcasing high-caliber crews while welcoming those new to the sport.  An estimated 180 competitors participated in the first race. This fall, over 6,500 athletes are expected to cross the finish line of the 2.5-mile scenic course.

The 2012 schedule of the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series, which brings together 20 previously independent events into the first year-long regatta series in the United States, launched on Sunday, March 18th with the first of five Manny Flick/Horvat Regattas for the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association (PSRA) and continues on Sunday, April 15th.

With three of the largest regattas in the Mid-Atlantic region on the schedule, as well as two of the nation's oldest regattas, the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series connects the rowing competitors of today to the historic home of the international rowing elite. It is built upon a tradition that launched November 12, 1835 with the first organized regatta on the Schuylkill (a full eight years before the start of the rowing program at Harvard). Over 175 years later, the Schuylkill River hosts more regattas annually than any other river in the nation.  Last year’s debut season featured over 35,000 competitors in over 7,700 boats representing not only high schools but colleges, clubs, masters and open programs from around the country.
