Hunter Pence, Claude Giroux, Sheila Reid, Sebastian Le Toux, Charlie Manuel & Peter Laviolette Among Headliners & Legends to be Honored at 108th Annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Awards Dinner, Monday, January 30th, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill

Philadelphia, PA  -- January 5, 2012 – Phillies outfielder Hunter Pence, Flyers center Claude Giroux, Villanova track and cross country National Champion Sheila Reid, Union midfielder Sebastian Le Toux, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel and Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette are among the headliners and legends who will be honored and in attendance on the evening of Monday, January 30th for the 108th Annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Awards Dinner, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, NJ.

The Philadelphia Sports Writers Association (PSWA) dinner is one of the oldest continuing sports awards banquets in the nation, and annually attracts a Philadelphia sports “who’s who” list of guests, attendees, and award winners from all of the area’s professional sports teams, collegiate programs, as well as numerous sports writers, radio and television media personalities of note. 

Each year, the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Awards Dinner presents a number of prestigious awards, eagerly anticipated by both the athletes and the fans. 

This year’s award winners already announced include:
  • Hunter Pence, PSWA Good Guy Award
  • Philadelphia Phillies, Team of the Year
  • Sheila Reid, Outstanding Amateur Athlete
  • Claude Giroux, Outstanding Professional Athlete
Announcements are coming up for the vaunted Humanitarian of the Year, Living Legend and Native Son awards, as well as the evening’s final award, the Most Courageous Athlete Award, which is not announced until the ceremony January 30th. 

A number of “Special Achievement” awards will also be presented, including one to Union midfielder Sebastian Le Toux, the team’s leading scorer this past season, and Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, the team’s all-time winningest manager. 

There will also be special presentations celebrating the 50th anniversary of Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game, Immaculata’s “Mighty Macs,” and a remembrance of the late heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier.

Returning this year is the always-popular comedian Joe Conklin in what is sure to be a highly-entertaining performance.  This year’s banquet is preceded by a cocktail hour and a silent auction of Philadelphia sports memorabilia along with display tables from sponsors and guests.
