Philadelphia City Rowing, Empowering Philadelphia Public School Students through the Sport of Rowing, Hires Terry Dougherty as Executive Director

Philadelphia, PA – October 24, 2011 – Philadelphia City Rowing, established in 2010 to empower Philadelphia public school students through the sport of rowing, has named Terry Dougherty as the organization’s Executive Director.

“Terry Dougherty brings a very wide range of expertise to her new role as our Executive Director, as well as a long history of working with education and recreation within the City of Philadelphia,” said Tony Schneider, chair of the Philadelphia City Rowing board.  “She has extensive experience with youth development as well as strategic planning and development, which are tremendous assets as we continue to build Philadelphia City Rowing.”

Before joining Philadelphia City Rowing, Dougherty was most recently Senior Director of Student Activities & Summer Camp at Valley Forge Military Academy & College (Wayne, PA). Previously, she was Executive Director of North Penn YMCA (Colmar, PA).  Dougherty was earlier the Director of Fitness & Wellness at the University of the Sciences (Philadelphia, PA) for four years, and was the Assistant Director for Recreation-Facilities at Temple University (Philadelphia, PA) for six years.  Her career began at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was Associate Director of  Recreation-Programming.

Her personal athletic accomplishments include earning All-Catholic League honors in field hockey at Bishop Conwell High School (Levittown, PA).  Dougherty was the goalie for the NCAA Division II National Champion field hockey team at Bloomsburg University (Bloomsburg, PA).

Dougherty earned her B.A. in Psychology from Bloomsburg, and earned her Masters in Counselor Education from Millersville University (Millersville, PA).  She is a long-time member of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, and has numerous professional certifications.

Philadelphia City Rowing was founded in 2010.  Based upon the principle that the sport of rowing teaches discipline, perseverance and teamwork, reinforcing invaluable lessons that extend into all areas of life, Philadelphia City Rowing was launched to increase access, affordability, and diversity to the sport in Philadelphia, the historic home of competitive rowing in the United States.  The non-profit foundation established a public school rowing team that is competitive locally, regionally and nationally, and has created an opportunity for participants to pursue rowing at the collegiate level and beyond.  Ultimately, Philadelphia City Rowing uses competitive rowing as a vehicle to improve the health, well-being, self-confidence and academic success of Philadelphia’s public school students while involving all participants in one of Philadelphia’s greatest sporting traditions.
