Philly Sports Stars Roy Halladay, Shane Victorino & Many More to Be Honored at 107th Annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Assoc. Monday Jan. 31st

Philadelphia, PA – January 3, 2010 – Roy Halladay, Philadelphia’s Cy Young Award winning pitcher, and his teammate Shane Victorino and his manager, Charlie Manuel are among the Philadelphia sports headliners who will be honored on Monday, January 31st at the 107th annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association dinner, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, NJ.

Tickets to the historic annual banquet, which begins at 6:30 p.m., are $95 per person, and available online at http://pswadinner.com.

The Philadelphia Sports Writers Association dinner is one of the oldest continuing sports awards banquets in the nation, and annually attracts a Philadelphia sports “who’s who” list of guests, attendees, and award winners from all of the area’s professional sports teams, collegiate programs, as well as numerous sports writers, radio and television media personalities of note.

Leading this year’s impressive list of sports star attractions is Halladay, the only pitcher ever to throw a perfect game and no-hitter in the same season, who has been named the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s Pro Athlete of the Year, and will be in Cherry Hill January 31st to receive his award in person. Halladay led the Phillies to the best regular season record in Major League baseball in 2010 by going 21-10 with a 2.44 ERA and 219 strikeouts. He led the National League in wins and topped the Majors in innings pitched (250 2/3), shutouts (4) and complete games (9).

Joining him on the dais is Victorino, recipient of the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s 2010 Humanitarian of the Year award. The Phillies centerfielder and his wife Melissa created the Shane Victorino Foundation to promote opportunities for youth in Philadelphia and Hawaii by engaging in projects which provide children with educational, recreational and wellness programs. Through a $900,000 pledge to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia, the Foundation’s first effort in Philadelphia will be to renovate the Nicetown Club, located in one of the most impoverished, economically challenged areas of the city, with no positive after-school options for neighborhood youth.

The 2009-10 Philadelphia Flyers, represented in person by Flyers forward Ian Lapierre, are the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s Team of the Year. The Flyers almost went home when the regular season ended, but prevailed in a shootout against the New York Rangers in the last game of the regular season. After upsetting the No. 2 seed New Jersey Devils in the first round, they found themselves down three games to none in the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Boston Bruins. They forced a seventh game, but then fell behind by a score of 3-0 in Game 7, in Boston. Improbably, the Flyers seized the opportunity to pull off the biggest comeback in franchise history, winning the game - and the series - 4-3. They are now only one of three teams in history to win a playoff series after trailing 3-0.

Bill Bergey, one of the greatest linebackers in the history of the Philadelphia Eagles, has been named the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Living Legend. Bergey, who was acquired in a trade with Cincinnati, was voted into the Pro Bowl in four of his seven seasons in Philadelphia. He played here as a middle linebacker from 1974 to 1980 with his last game coming in that year’s Super Bowl against Oakland. He was named Eagles MVP three times, once made 233 tackles in a single season, and once held the NFL record for most interceptions by a linebacker in a single season.

Other leading Philadelphia athletes, from both the professional and the collegiate ranks, will be honored during the course of the annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association dinner, including student-athletes and coaches from Villanova University, Temple University, Drexel University, University of Pennsylvania, Saint Joseph’s University and LaSalle University.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel will speak at this year’s dinner about the season past and the season coming up for the Philadelphia baseball club.

Comedian Joe Conklin will also perform. There will also be a cocktail hour before the banquet and a silent auction of Philadelphia sports memorabilia.

Tickets to the 107th Annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association dinner are $95 per person and available online at http://pswadinner.com.
