Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series Inaugural Season Schedule Released with 22 Regattas on Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River beginning Sunday, March 20th

Philadelphia, PA – January 26, 2011 – The Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series, which brings together 22 previously independent events into the first year-long regatta series in the United States, has released the complete schedule for its debut season.

Beginning on Sunday, March 20th with the first of the five high school oriented “Manny Flick” races for the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association, and continuing through November 13th’s Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta, the 2011 debut season of the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series will attract over 35,000 competitors in over 7,700 boats representing high school, college, club, open and masters programs from around the country.

The Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series is governed by The Schuylkill Navy, which was founded in 1858 and is the oldest amateur athletic governing body in the U.S. It is comprised of the 12 rowing clubs of Philadelphia’s historic Boathouse Row along the Schuylkill River.

Built upon a tradition that launched November 12, 1835 with the first organized regatta on the Schuylkill (a full eight years before the start of the rowing program at Harvard), the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series is the first of its kind in any city in the U.S. and represents a beloved Philadelphia athletic institution. The Schuylkill River hosts more regattas each year than any other river in the nation, as well as two of the country’s oldest continuing regattas, The Schuylkill Navy Regatta (dating back to before 1860) and the Independence Day Regatta (initiated in 1880). Those two historic events are a significant part of the 2011 schedule for the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series, which also includes the second largest regatta in the nation (the Stotesbury Cup Regatta), which is also the nation’s oldest and largest high school rowing event.

The Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series has been designed to build further support for the sport of rowing in not only the City of Philadelphia, but the region and the nation as well.

With three of the largest regattas in the Mid-Atlantic region on the schedule, as well as two of the nation’s oldest regattas, the 2011 schedule of the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series connects the rowing competitors of today to the historic home of the international rowing elite.
