NHL Great Mike Richter Leads Inaugural Class of 10 Inductees in New Montgomery County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Sept. 28th
The 10 Montgomery County chapter Hall of Fame inductees will be honored at a banquet that will be hosted by Lou Tilley, award winning anchor and producer, on Tuesday, September 28 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge (1160 First Avenue, King of Prussia PA 19406, (610) 337-2000.). The 10 inaugural inductees into the Montco Chapter were selected earlier this year by the board of directors of the newly-formed chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, which included former Penn State gridiron star Blair Thomas, Philadelphia Eagles titan Tommy McDonald, chapter President Dave Ritting, and 18 other Montco business and community leaders.
The 10-member inaugural class of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Montgomery County Chapter includes:
- Jim Fenerty, athletic director and longtime boys’ basketball coach at Germantown Academy;
- Jennie Hall, former professional women’s basketball player from Norristown who was a standout at Rutgers University and head coach of the women’s basketball team at Coppin State;
- Rod Johnson, a three-sport star at Springford High School, a Collegiate Baseball All-American at Temple University, former Minor League Rookie of the Year, and an assistant baseball coach at Villanova University;
- Mike Richter, who began his ice hockey career at Germantown Academy and went on to a legendary career in the National Hockey League as goalie of the 1994 Stanley Cup Champion New York Rangers;
- Brad Scioli, from Upper Merion High School, who was an all-state linebacker and Upper Merion Male Athlete of the Year, competed for four seasons at Penn State (including the undefeated 1994 squad that won the Rose Bowl) and played six seasons with the Indianapolis Colts at defensive end;
- Richard (Dick) Shoulberg, the legendary boys and girls swimming coach at Germantown Academy who has guided numerous International swimming championship squads, coached over 150 high school All-Americans, and 11 Olympic swimmers in his career; and
- Bob Shoudt, outstanding track and field coach with career highlights including Villanova University where he was three-time Big East Conference Women’s Track Coach of the Year; Ursinus College; and Norristown High School. Shoudt will be introduced by Billy “White Shoes” Johnson, member of the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time team and the College Football Hall of Fame.
Also to be inducted on Tuesday, September 28th are two posthumous honorees: Colonel Joseph Powers, who was a long-time King of Prussia resident, outstanding high school athlete at Haverford High School, football and track star at Gettysburg College, and a highly-decorated United States Army officer with over 31 years in service; and James Baxter, longtime Upper Merion soccer coach who pioneered the development of the sport in the region, was a founder of the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association and a member of the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame. In addition, Bob Gray will be a special inductee in the “Unsung Hero” category. Gray has been involved with the King of Prussia Indians Youth Football program for over 25 years, and his contribution has been a key to it's long time success.
