Dr. Mark B. McClellan to Speak at the 6th Annual Meeting of ISMPP

Briarcliff Manor, NY, April 7, 2010—The 6th Annual Meeting of The International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) takes place April 19-21, 2010, in Arlington, Virginia, USA. This year’s meeting, “Delivering Value and Driving Advocacy in Medical Publications,” will address some of the key challenges in today’s medical publications environment. ISMPP is honored to have as a keynote speaker Mark Barr McClellan, MD, PhD, Director of the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform, Senior Fellow, Economic Studies, and Leonard D. Schaeffer Chair in Health Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC. Dr McClellan is also a former director of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and former administrator of the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS).

Dr. McClellan’s keynote address on April 19 launches the 6th Annual ISMPP meeting. In his presentation, “Defining Value in Healthcare and Medical Research,” Dr. McClellan will discuss how medical research and rigorous methodologies can contribute to improving the efficiency of healthcare delivery and how pharmaceuticals, biotech products, and medical devices can play a role in improving healthcare. According to Dr. McClellan, “Medical publications are going to play an important role in identifying the comparative effectiveness of medical treatments, practices, and policies. The intersection of the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare reform, particularly the demand for more evidence focused on effectiveness and efficiency, will have a significant impact on medical publishing.”

In addition to his roles at FDA and CMS, Dr McClellan has served on the President’s Council of Economic Advisors and as senior director for healthcare policy at the White House. Dr. McClellan has been involved in developing several key reforms to healthcare policy, including the Medicare prescription drug benefit, changes to the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, the FDA’s Critical Path initiative, and public-private initiatives to obtain information on the quality and cost of healthcare. He has twice received the Kenneth J Arrow Award for Outstanding Research in Health Economics and has served as an associate professor in economics and in medicine at Stanford University and associate editor of the Journal of Health Economics.

Other keynote speakers at the ISMPP annual meeting will include David Verbraska, Vice President, Worldwide Regulatory Policy and Intelligence at Pfizer Inc. and International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations Regulatory Policy and Technical Standards Committee member; Rita F. Redberg, MD, MSc, Professor of Medicine at UCSF School of Medicine and Editor of the Archives of Internal Medicine, and Stephanie Vance, the Advocacy Guru.
